Why landlords ask for liability insurance

Personal liability insurance is not required by law in Germany – but landlords and property managers often ask for it. The reason is damage to the flat: a leaking washing machine, a cracked washbasin or a lost key to the building’s locking system can cost thousands of euros. With liability insurance that covers damage to rented property (Mietsachschäden), the landlord knows the money is there.

How it works

  1. Fill in the short form. Tell us whether you are already insured with us and enter the address of your new flat.
  2. Already insured with us? We update your address and send the confirmation by email – on working days usually within a few hours.
  3. Not insured yet? We send you a suitable offer. As soon as you accept it, you receive the confirmation for your landlord.
  4. Forward it to your landlord – as a PDF by email, or printed for the viewing or contract signing.

What the confirmation contains

  • Your name and the address of your new flat
  • Your Allianz policy number and the start of cover
  • The sum insured and that damage to rented property is covered

Moving in and need to pay a deposit? With a rent deposit guarantee (Mietkautionsbürgschaft), your landlord receives a guarantee instead of up to three months’ rent in cash – and you keep your money for the move. Just tick the box in the form. More about the rent deposit guarantee.

Request your proof of insurance

Frequently asked questions

Is personal liability insurance mandatory in Germany?

Not by law. But landlords may ask for it, and consumer advice centres recommend it for everyone – it is one of the cheapest and most important policies in Germany.

I am insured with another company – can you send the proof?

We can only confirm insurance that we manage. Ask your current insurer for a confirmation – or let us check whether switching to Allianz through finanXpats makes sense for you.

Does liability insurance cover damage to my rented flat?

Good policies cover damage to rented property (Mietsachschäden), for example water damage to the floor. Normal wear and tear is not covered, and some items such as glass may be excluded. We check this with you.

How quickly do I get the confirmation?

If you are already insured with us, on working days usually within a few hours. If we set up a new policy, as soon as you have accepted the offer – often the same day.
